Eau Claire Golf & Country Club was
The Eau Claire Golf and Country Club was founded in 1889. Two years later, the Club moved to a new location and hired Tom Vardon (brother of the immortal Harry Vardon) to design the new course. Although the course has become overgrown with trees and lost much of its original “golden-age” character, this is still a beautiful example of “golden-age architecture with elevated green pads and uniquely contoured surrounds.
In 2017, the Club hired Norby to prepare a long-range master plan geared towards reducing on-going maintenance and restoring its classic appeal. The master plan emphasized the need to remove trees, improve irrigation and to conduct an comprehensive bunker renovation to restore its unique character .
The Club has removed nearly 3,000 mature trees to reduce shade, improve turf quality and restore the original playing corridors. In 2021 the Club completed a bunker renovation and the reconstruction of all 18 tee complexes including the addition of new forward tees. The primary emphasis was reducing maintenance and restoring the golden age character of the course. Total bunker square footage was reduced by over 40 percent.
